The Iowa Board of Regents gave the green light to three expenditures requested by the University of Iowa at its Wednesday meeting.
The Daily Iowan reports that the Regents gave the University permission to sell Mayflower Residence Hall and construct a new residence hall on the east side of campus. Mayflower could close as early as the end of the spring 2024 semester, predicated on the completion of current construction in Hillcrest Residence Hall.
The Iowa Now website reports that the new residence hall is expected to draw students to the main university campus and dining hall.
The Regents also approved the purchase of a property at 9 Melrose Place in Iowa City for as high as $420,000. The University wants to raze a residence on the property and combine that parcel with other surrounding parcels they own to expand parking for the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
Finally, the Regents approved a $45 million window replacement project at the UIHC. It will be funded by University Hospitals Building Usage Funds to replace the existing windows on levels 3 through 11 at the Stead Family Children’s Hospital and those on the Connector Bridge. Construction is expected to start this spring and will take over two years to complete. A suit against the contractors who installed the original windows is still unresolved.
