A new development on the northeast side of Iowa City could come to fruition after a rezoning ordinance passed on its first reading this week.
The Daily Iowan reports that the Iowa City City Council unanimously approved the rezoning of land near the intersection of North Dodge Street and North Scott Boulevard to allow the development to be built.
The development will meet the city’s Comprehensive Plan goals with a mix of housing types and filling unused space in town instead of branching out to the far edges of the city. The DI says the development, if approved, will consist of a restaurant, a commercial building with eight residential dwellings above it, nine townhouses, and two drive-throughs with the intention of being used for a coffee shop and an ATM.
Mayor pro-tem Megan Alter said the addition of a restaurant and coffee shop would be welcomed by people who work in the area.
The council needs to okay the ordinance two more times before the development can move forward.
