The University of Iowa is requesting permission from the state Board of Regents to buy a piece of property east of the UI Hospitals and Clinics and use it to expand parking capacity.
The Daily Iowan reports that the request will be made Wednesday to purchase 9 Melrose Place for up to $420,000. The university previously tried to purchase the parcel without success, but the owner has now contacted them about selling the land to them.
The land is 6,420 square feet and contains a 1,152-square-foot three-bedroom residential rental unit. It is reportedly the last remaining privately-owned property on Melrose Place. The U of I acquired the surrounding properties over ten years ago.
If the request is approved by the Regents and the sale is completed, the University wants to collaborate with the City of Iowa City to vacate the public street that serves the residential property on the land.
