The annual Iowa Board of Regents’ Human Resources Report shows an increase in faculty resignations at the University of Iowa and the other state-run universities.
The Daily Iowan reports that from fiscal 2021 to fiscal 2022 UI faculty resignations rose from 80 to 92. During the same period, resignations at ISU increased from 36 to 44 and from 10 to 21 at the University of Northern Iowa.
The resignations correlate with the 2022 Campus Climate Survey at the U of I. In that survey, over half of faculty, staff and postdoctoral students said they considered leaving the university in the 2021-22 school year. 75 percent of the respondents said bias at the university caused them to consider leaving, with 62 percent saying better salaries or compensation at another institution was a consideration.
Grad students have asked the Regents for improvements to their current contract, including a 10 percent salary increase, 12 weeks of parental leave, access to free parking or reimbursement of parking expenses, and the option to work remotely for up to 25 days a school year.
The Campaign to Organize Graduate Students is set to meet again with regents on Monday February 27th in a closed session to continue negotiations.
