An area transient was taken into custody after allegedly trying to steal a package from a porch, and threatening a person who tried to stop him.

Police say the incident occurred on Monday afternoon near the intersection of Diana Street and Keokuk Court. 30-year-old Willie Collins was in the area and was observed by the reporting party, attempting to take a package that didn’t belong to him from a resident’s porch. When the party confronted Collins, he allegedly pulled out a knife and threatened to kill them. Collins then fled the scene.

Officers located Collins in the area and made an attempt to speak with him, but he reportedly took off on foot. He was apprehended after a short foot chase and was placed into handcuffs.

Collins was charged with Intimidation with a Dangerous Weapon, 1st degree Harassment, and Interference with Official Acts. If convicted on all counts, he could be sentenced to over 7 years in prison.
