A Coralville man who police say has eight domestic abuse convictions in the last twelve years was arrested for the same crime early Monday.

Officers were called to the Holiday Road apartment of 31-year-old Janard Goins after a 911 call was disconnected. Upon arrival, officers learned that he assaulted the mother of his child.

The victim said Goins came home shortly before 1am and began the alleged assault. He held the woman down on the bed, and she pushed him away. Goins then reportedly grabbed her by the neck and strangled her. He allegedly made numerous threats to kill the woman. She tried to call 911 but was thwarted by Goins, who took the phone away from her and disconnected the call.

When officers arrived, Goins refused to comply and had to be physically restrained. The woman’s phone was located on his person.

Two children were present in the apartment at the time of the alleged assault.

Goins was arrested and faces numerous charges. They include Domestic Abuse Assault impeding Airflow, Domestic Abuse Assault 3rd or subsequent offense, 1st degree Harassment, two counts of Child Endangerment, Interference with Official Acts, and Obstruction of Emergency Communications. If convicted on all charges, Goins could be sentenced to over 16 years in prison.
