An Iowa City man already sitting in the Johnson County Jail since Sunday was additionally charged after  an alleged car burglary and subsequent use of a credit card taken during that incident.

Shortly after the alleged theft, Brooks used the victim’s debit and credit cards at Kum & Go on South Gilbert Street and the Kwik Star on Keokuk Street to purchase items that included lottery tickets.

Police executed a search warrant at the home of Brooks’ mother on Wednesday and allegedly found items belonging to the victim.

If convicted on all charges, Brooks could be sentenced to over 26 years in prison.

Earlier this week, KCJJ reported that Brooks was taken into custody on the 29th of January after it was determined he was in possession of a storage unit filled with stolen merchandise tying him to at least seven burglaries. Related charges for that incident carry a maximum prison sentence of 38 years. He also has been charged with several other incidents from 2022 that would add several more years to his sentence.
