U.S. Army Corps of Engineers warns of dangerous ice conditions at Coralville Lake

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Rock Island District, is warning the public to stay off the ice at Coralville Lake. Recent extreme cold has added ice to the surface of the water while decreasing inflows have caused unstable conditions.

As water levels change, dangerous slopes can form along the shoreline and ice is at risk of cracking, breaking or giving away at any time. Ice could also break away from the shoreline, creating a free-floating mat, or large air pockets could form ice bridges. These conditions are extremely unsafe, no matter the thickness of the ice, making escape or successful rescue very difficult.

A snowmobiler was rescued after falling through the ice just south of Mahaffey Bridge Sunday afternoon.

Contact the Coralville Lake Administration Office at 319-338-3543, extension 6300, for more information on lake levels, outflows and inflows.
