A rare January tornado touched down near Williamsburg Monday afternoon.

The force of the winds blew a semi and a passenger vehicle off of Interstate 80 near rural Williamsburg. The tornado continued across the interstate to the northeast, and receded after nearing the South Amana area.

The warning area covered parts of Benton, Johnson, Jones, Linn and Iowa counties. Reports of inch-sized hail in Homestead, ¾ inch sized near Shueyville, and quarter inch hail reported in Williamsburg, Mount Vernon, Lisbon and Manchester. Minimal power outages were reported.

The National Weather Service said this was the first January tornado in the state since 1967. They will have a more complete survey completed later today.
