The City of Coralville is hoping to secure funds from the State of Iowa and the federal government to relocate power lines underground in the city.

The Gazette reports the project has an estimated cost of $19.6 million, most of which will be federally funded. City officials say underground power lines are less vulnerable to severe storms and provide more reliable service to residents. The lines would be relocated from overhead powerlines coming from backyards to underground lines in front yards.

The project area includes the Mid-American Energy service area south of Interstate 80 and affects over 9000 residents.

Coralville is holding a public information meeting at 5:15 pm Tuesday at City Hall. A brief presentation will be followed with comments and questions from attendees.
