Iowa City Police have arrested a man they say fired a gun at another subject on the Ped Mall.

Witnesses say just before 4pm Saturday they observed 29-year-old Dante Yance of Primrose Court firing a gun point blank at another subject. Nearby officers say they heard the gunshots and passed multiple people running from the scene.

Yance was located and detained at the intersection of East College and South Clinton streets. Evidence of shots fired was also recovered at the scene, including damage from bullets that struck the Old Capitol Town Center. No one is believed to have been injured during the incident. Yance allegedly admitted to shooting the gun and said he threw the Glock 43 in a dumpster near Brother’s, where it was later located.

Yance is charged with Intimidation with a Dangerous Weapon With Injury or Provoking Fear, Going Armed With Intent, Reckless Use of a Firearm Causing Damage and two counts of Assault While Using or Displaying a Weapon. If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum of 21 years in prison.

Yance was fined $250 earlier this year after fighting with police who removed him from an Iowa City Transit bus at The Quarters on Highway 6 East. Last year he was given a suspended sentence after assaulting and injuring a clerk at the Lower Muscatine Road Delimart who confronted him over not wearing a shirt inside the store.

Police say the Ped Mall shooting is unrelated to a Saturday night shooting on Cross Park Avenue. More details on that incident can be found on the front page of 1630KCJJ.com.
