Two men have been arrested after allegedly scuffling with Iowa City Police during an early Saturday morning traffic stop.
Arrest records indicate 32-year-old Luis Ramos Ramirez of Marion was pulled over just after 1:45am after making an improper right turn at Burlington and Madison Streets. Police say Ramos Ramirez refused to roll down the window of his 2018 Toyota Tundra, refused to exit the car, and refused to identify himself. He then reportedly resisted arrest, assaulted police, and had to be dragged out of the vehicle.
Police say Ramos Ramirez showed signs of intoxication, refused testing and provided a breath alcohol level of .07%. He was arrested and charged with Operating While Intoxicated – 2nd Offense, Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations, Interference With Official Acts, Harassment of a Public Official and a traffic violation. If convicted on all charges, Ramos Ramirez faces a maximum of over three years in jail.
Police say a passenger in Ramos Ramirez’s car…identified as 26-year-old Pedro Ramos of Bowery Street…attempted to physically prevent Ramos Ramirez from being taken into custody. Ramos allegedly grabbed an officer’s vest, kicked an officer after he was in handcuffs and tried grabbing officers’ fingers. He’s charged with Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations and Interference With Official Acts. If convicted on both charges, he faces a maximum of 13 months in jail.
