University of Iowa Police are investigating a reported car theft.
According to a news release from the UI Department of Public Safety, there has been a recent uptick in car thefts reported on campus. The latest incident involves a January 5th report that a car was stolen from the parking lot of the Aspire Apartment Complex off Mormon Trek Boulevard sometime between the late-night hours on January 4th and the early morning hours on January 5th.
The incident remains under investigation and police are encouraging those with a car on campus to be vigilant and take extra precautions, including:
- Close and lock all windows and doors when you park.
- Bring your key with you. Never leave your keys in your car, on your car, or in the ignition.
- Park in a well-lit area whenever possible.
- Don’t leave valuables in your vehicle. If you must, make sure they are not in sight, or lock them in your trunk.
- Consider installing an audible alarm system if your car does not have one.
- Consider installing a steering wheel lock, especially if your vehicle is particularly vulnerable to theft.
- If your car is stolen contact police immediately by dialing 9-1-1 to make a theft report.
