FEMA has begun the appeal process window for flood hazard determinations on the preliminary Flood Insurance Rate Map, or FIRM, for Johnson County.

Once finalized, the flood hazard determinations will become the basis of floodplain management measures the County and cities must adopt to participate in the National Flood Insurance Program.

Any owner or lessee of land who believes their property rights will be adversely affected by the proposed flood hazard determinations can now submit appeals. Those that wish to appeal must be able to support their complaint with scientific or technical data indicating that the proposed flood hazard are incorrect.

The preliminary Flood Insurance Rate Map shows areas where there is a one percent annual chance that flooding there could exceed the 100-year floodplain.

The online appeals website is https://ifis.iowafloodcenter.org/ifis/newmaps/hazard/

You can also present appeals at the Johnson County Planning, Development and Sustainability Department, on the second floor of the County Administration Building.
