A trial date has been set for a northwest Iowa man accused of holding Iowa City Police at bay during a standoff last month.
33-year-old Carldale Hunter entered a not guilty plea on Friday. Judge Paul Miller then set a trial date for April 18th.
The ICPD received a report around 2pm on December 12th that Hunter was at the Court Street parking ramp trying to force his wife and the couple’s three children onto a bus to Chicago. When officers arrived, Hunter reportedly pulled out a .38 caliber pistol, grabbed his wife, and pressed the gun to the back of her head.
Police say during the standoff Hunter unsuccessfully attempted to carjack a vehicle on the second floor of the ramp.
Hunter eventually released his wife and shot himself. He survived the self-inflicted wound and was charged with 1st Degree Robbery, 2nd Degree Kidnapping, Assault with a Dangerous Weapon, Child Endangerment, Dominion or Control of a Firearm By A Felon, Domestic Abuse Assault Involving a Weapon and two counts of Going Armed With Intent.
If convicted on all charges, Hunter faces a maximum of 71 years in prison.
Also on Friday, a case management conference was set for February 24th.
