21 different people have applied to fill an open seat on the Iowa City City Council.
The deadline for applications was Tuesday. A seat on the council opened when councilor Janice Weiner stepped down after she was elected in State Senate District 45 in November. One week after the election, the council voted to fill the remainder of Weiner’s term instead of holding a special election.
Among the 21 applicants are former Iowa state Rep. Mary Mascher, former University of Iowa student government student liaison to the council Elizabeth Miglin, and UI Mathematical Biology Professor Bruce Ayati.
The council is expected to name a new member at Tuesday night’s meeting.
