A Des Moines woman faces several charges after being observed driving an unlicensed vehicle.

Police stopped 22-year-old Jameshia Nevills near the intersection of Highway 965 and Dans Drive in North Liberty just after midnight Saturday for operating a Mitsubishi Galant without front or rear plates. Upon contact, the officer reportedly detected the odor of ingested alcohol and saw that the front passenger was holding an opened can of alcohol.  An odor of marijuana was also reportedly detected. Nevills allegedly had bloodshot watery eyes, slurred speech, and said she was heading towards Des Moines on Interstate 80 when in fact she was heading towards North Liberty on Highway 965.  She also provided a different first name when asked.

During a probable cause search, a citation with Nevills’ real name for driving the same vehicle was located. A check of her name in the system allegedly revealed that Nevills came back as a revoked driver who also had active warrants. It was later verified through her tattoos that she was the wanted subject on the citation.

Nevills failed field testing for sobriety and refused a PBT. As she was being escorted to the squad car, Nevills allegedly tried to shake the officer’s hands off her arm and kicked his right wrist.

Nevills also had a previous OWI conviction in 2020 and a pending OWI and marijuana possession case from Cedar Falls this past October. The warrants were for failing to appear on the October incident. Police also stated that she was unable to provide insurance information on the vehicle, and the title did not have a sale date.

Nevills was charged with 2nd offense OWI, Driving while License Revoked, providing False ID information, Interference with Official Acts including Bodily Injury, operating a non-registered vehicle, and failure to provide Financial Liability. If convicted on all counts, she could be sentenced to up to over four years in jail.

WHO TV reports that when Nevills was arrested for her 2020 OWI in Polk County, she allegedly grabbed an officer’s crotch in a sexual manner against his will during processing, and had made prior comments about how she was attracted to him. She was originally charged with sexual harassment but instead pleaded guilty to Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations. She was given a 1 year suspended sentence on both  charges and sentenced to 2 year’s probation.

Nevills is being held for transfer to Black Hawk County to face the October charges.
