An Iowa City man who allegedly fled from police who tried to stop him as he was riding his motorized bicycle faces additional charges after drugs were found on his person at the Johnson County Jail.

Police say 32-year-old Jeffery Naughton of Cottonwood Avenue was operating his bike near the intersection of Sycamore Street and Lower Muscatine Road just before 1:20 am Tuesday without a functional rear red light. An officer turned on her red and blue lights in an attempt to stop him, but he continued on. Even after the officer activated her siren, Naughton kept on, running a stop sign. He allegedly refused to stop for several blocks and cut through a sidewalk before taking off on foot from officers.

Naughton was detained, and during a search incident to arrest a meth pipe was found in his coat pocket.

Naughton’s fate worsened when he was booked at the Johnson County Jail. During intake, he reportedly denied having any drugs on his person. However, a small plastic baggie with a white substance that field tested positive for meth was found by jail staff in Naughton’s personal property.

Naughton has been charged with possession of contraband in a correctional facility, eluding, interference with official acts, and possession of drug paraphernalia. If convicted on all counts, Naughton could be sentenced to over six years in prison.
