Iowa football’s offensive woes lead to money for local charity

The Iowa football team’s offensive woes have inspired a national sports social media company to help raise funds for a local charity…but time is running out to donate.

The Sickos Committee is a Twitter account run by people who, in the company’s words, “just love College Football and love to watch all the games regardless of who is playing. The crazier or unconventionally appealing a game is the more we want to watch it.”

During the 2022 season, Iowa ranked 118th nationally in points per game and 129th in yards per game. Despite the offensive struggles, Iowa’s defense and special teams played well enough to keep the Hawkeyes alive for the West Division championship into the final weekend of the regular season.

That caught the attention of the Sickos Committee, which mirrors the “Punting is winning!” mentality popular among Hawkeye fans. Iowa has been at or near the top of every Sickos Committee poll all season. The poll is voted on by the account’s followers.

The Hawkeyes won the “Sickos National Championship” in polling earlier this month. As part of the victory, the Sickos Committee committed to raising funds in the home city of the winning school. Sickos Committee voters chose the CommUnity Crisis Center as its charity for Iowa City.

The Committee’s goal of $2,000 was met early , so the new goal was set at $3,065…one for every Iowa offensive yard during the 2022 season. That goal was met Saturday morning, so the final goal will be $5,554. That matches the number of total yards the Hawkeyes racked up in 2002…the highest total of the Kirk Ferentz Era.

The fundraiser ends on Monday. Each $10 donation leads to one entry into a raffle for a $100 gift card from The Onion online store, which sells Sickos merchandise.

To donate, go to givebutter.com/sickoscommittee. To enter the contest, screenshot the donation and email it to SickosCommittee@gmail.com.

Those details can also be found under this story at 1630KCJJ.com. And again, the contest ends on Monday.

The Hawkeyes face Kentucky in the Music City bowl Saturday morning at 11 on ABC.
