A man who allegedly stole items from a Coral Ridge Mall store refused to identify himself and was arrested under the name John Doe last week.

On Friday, the unidentified man was seen selecting merchandise at Scheels, then reportedly left the store through the employee exit into the parking lot. Store staff contacted the man outside the store and waited for officers to arrive. The man refused to identify himself or provide any form of identification. He was asked to provide his name, but he said “that’s your job to find out.”

A search of his person discovered two glass pipes with a green burnt substance, another glass pipe with a cloudy white substance, and three unidentified capsules in a prescription bottle with the label removed.

The man allegedly stole $56 in merchandise from Scheels.

The John Doe was taken to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for evaluation. Upon discharge Tuesday, the man, identified as 25-year-old Boni Mushalangwa was formally charged with  5th degree theft, two counts of unlawful possession of a prescription drug, interference with official acts, and possession of drug paraphernalia. If convicted on all counts, Mushalangwa could be sentenced to 28 months in jail.
