A northeast Iowa man who authorities say had a 12-pack of beer and empty beer cans in his truck allegedly claimed he was rushing to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics because his girlfriend was having surgery.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, 41-year-old Jacob Eitel of Hawkeye was clocked travelling 107 miles per hour in a 70 mile-per-hour zone on southbound Interstate 380 near the Iowa River Bridge just before 11:15 Tuesday night. The arresting trooper reports that once Eitel pulled over his 2004 Dodge Ram 1500, a 12-pack of Natural Light could be seen in the passenger seat. Multiple empty beer cans were reportedly strewn inside the vehicle.
The State Patrol says Eitel claimed he was rushing to the UIHC because his girlfriend was having surgery. He also allegedly admitted to drinking.
Eitel reportedly showed signs of intoxication, performed poorly on field sobriety tests, and provided breath alcohol totals of .125% and .113%. He was arrested and charged with Operating While Intoxicated – 2nd Offense and Speeding.
