An Iowa City man convicted of sexually abusing a minor has lost an appeal attempt.

Lawyers for 59-year-old Jeffry Waite filed a motion to reconsider back in April. Waite was found guilty in 2019 on five counts of 3rd Degree Sexual Abuse and one of Lascivious Acts with A Minor. He was sentenced to 30 years in prison.

Police say Waite sexually abused the girl at his Oak Crest Hill Road residence from 2013 to 2019.

Waite’s lawyers appealed his convictions, claiming “the State’s expert witness directly and the prosecutor indirectly vouched for the complaining witness’s credibility, his convictions are not supported by sufficient evidence, and the district court abused its discretion in imposing consecutive terms of incarceration.”

The Iowa Court of Appeals rejected Waite’s appeal and reaffirmed the sentence last year. A reconsideration hearing was held last month, and last Monday Judge Ian Thornhill denied the motion to reconsider.
