Muscatine Community College was closed Wednesday morning due to a threat directed at specific members of the college staff.
The Muscatine Journal reports that the school received an e-mail Wednesday morning with the threat. College leadership immediately notified police and chose to close the campus to ensure the safety of students and employees. Students were asked to leave the campus, and notifications were sent to students and employees via website and media posts.
All district employees had been notified of the threat as many teachers work at multiple campuses.
Muscatine Police Department Assistant Chief Steve Snider said that the threat was not a bomb threat, but out of an abundance of caution campus buildings were cleared and locked. Student housing was restricted to residents only.
Late Wednesday afternoon, the college’s website announced that classes would resume today after determining there is no ongoing threat. Students and employees can expect increased security measures as well as an on-site counselor who will be available to provide services and support.
People with information are asked to contact Muscatine Police. There are currently no suspects or persons of interest.
