The race director of Run CRANDIC, a marathon run between Iowa City and Cedar Rapids, says the event won’t return in 2023.
The Gazette says that Jim Dwyer, who is also president of Corridor Running and co-owner of Iowa Running Company in downtown Cedar Rapids, explained that organizers are discontinuing Run CRANDIC due to logistical and staffing issues.
The marathon requires about 75 to 100 public safety personnel from six agencies to secure the race route. The organization builds in race fees to pay for the personnel, but they say it’s getting more and more difficult to get officers to work special events.
Linn County Sheriff Brian Gardner told the Gazette he doesn’t believe that his department is specifically the cause for the event’s cancellation.
The first Run CRANDIC was held in 2018, was held virtually in 2020 during the pandemic and cancelled altogether in 2021. It returned in 2022 with more than 1000 participants.
Organizers say in lieu of the marathon, they plan to enhance and expand the other five races they put on in the coming year.
