Iowa City Police say a transient used a fake gun to rob another man last week.

According to arrest records, 23-year-old Jared Simmons entered an apartment on Wayne Avenue just after 7:15pm on November 16th, confined the victim in the bathroom, and stole $70. Simmons reportedly assaulted the victim and threatened his life while brandishing a fake handgun.  The two had been involved in a previous dispute.

Police say Simmons admitted to being in the bathroom with the man and to being armed with a fake handgun. A search warrant executed on another Wayne Avenue apartment where Simmons was located reportedly turned up a fake gun in Simmons’ bag. Police say they then located a second fake firearm…one which Simmons allegedly admitted he used in the robbery.

Simmons is charged with 2nd Degree Robbery. If convicted, he faces a maximum of ten years in prison.

Simmons was also charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance – 3rd or Subsequent Offense and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia after police say he was found with a glass pipe and methamphetamine inside a South Lucas Street apartment on October 11th. A conviction on those charges carries a maximum sentence of over five years in prison.
