Inspectors at the University of Iowa say that the Mayflower Residence Hall window that a freshman fell from last week had no issues.
The Gazette reports that it was just before 4:30 am Thursday when the male, who was playing catch with other students in the residence hall room, leaned back and fell through the screen. UI officials say he fell from the sixth-floor window and landed on the north roof, about five stories down. He was able to speak to first responders and was taken to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for treatment. Information about the student or his condition hasn’t been released.
UI Spokesperson Chris Brewer told the newspaper that all residence hall rooms have windows that open, and many students enjoy opening the windows to get fresh air. Despite the accident, the University doesn’t plan any changes to the windows.
The incident was ruled completely accidental, but an investigation continues. The university has a policy banning using rollerblades, roller skates, and skateboards in the residence halls, as well as throwing or bouncing balls or athletic equipment. The accident also occurred during “quiet hours,” which are from 11pm to 7am Sunday through Thursday and 1 to 9 am Friday and Saturday. Policy states that no noise should be heard during those times from another room or area.
