Longtime City High teacher and former KCJJ host Dale Hibbs has died.

According to the Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service web site, Hibbs died Wednesday at the age of 82.

Hibbs taught high school for 42 years…thirty of those at City High. Former Iowa City Superintendent Lane Plugge once called him, “Mr. City High” for all of his contributions to the school.

Hibbs had two radio shows on KCJJ: “Just wondering” and “Your Turn, Johnson County”. He was also the first Iowa City teacher to be elected to the state legislature.

A celebration of life will be held at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service on Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m., with a short program at 3 p.m. At 4 p.m., attendees are encouraged to move to the nearby Kirkwood Room to share stories of Hibbs’ life.

Hibbs is survived by his wife, two sons, and multiple grandchildren.
