The City of Iowa City’s City Council has passed a resolution opposing a ballot initiative that would give Iowans a “fundamental individual right” to keep and bear arms.

At their meeting earlier this week, they voted to oppose Public Measure Number One, which appears on ballots in next week’s midterm elections. It would make any restraint invalid unless it meets the demands of what is called “strict scrutiny.”

Cedar, Washington and Iowa County sheriffs are among nearly a dozen across the state who have gone on record supporting the amendment.

Johnson County Supervisors issued a similar opposition resolution last week; Linn County Supervisors did so earlier this week.
