A cross country runner at Mount Mercy College was shot while running late yesterday afternoon.

Police say a 21-year-old student was jogging in the neighborhood of the west side of campus near the intersection of Elmhurst Drive and Hazel Drive Northeast just before 4pm when he was caught in the crossfire of at least two shooters.

The Mount Mercy Campus, as well as Regis Middle School, and Garfield Elementary School were put on lockdown while police investigated the shooting.

A security camera in the neighborhood caught an image of the student, who seemingly was shot in the arm. A different doorbell camera caught the sound of dozens of shots fired at the time of the incident. Several houses in the area of the shooting were hit by the gunfire, but no one else was reported injured.

Mt. Mercy president Tom Wilson said that security will be beefed up around the area for the next several days. Police believe it to be a random shooting, and the public is not at risk.

No arrests have been announced.
