A Sunday morning residential fire in Iowa City caused nearly $400,000 in damage and sent an occupant to the hospital.
In a release from the City, a passerby reported a fire at 1011 Woodlawn Avenue just before 8:50 am. The Iowa City Fire Department was dispatched and arrived on scene within five minutes.
Responding units encountered flames on the exterior of the two-story wood frame home covering the entire front of the residence and part of two sides. One occupant was home at the time of the fire and was alerted by a smoke alarm. The occupant was able to exit the residence on their own. They were treated by firefighters at the scene and transported to an area hospital.
Three fire engines, two ladder trucks, a Battalion Chief, and the Johnson County Ambulance Service were initially dispatched to the fire; a second alarm was called to bring in off duty Iowa City firefighters.
It took until nearly 10:30 am to bring the fire under control. The residence sustained an estimated $385,000 in damages to the interior and exterior.
The Solon, West Branch, Coralville, and North Liberty fire departments assisted on scene. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
