A car dealership and repair shop on Iowa City’s south side had a car taken from their premises over the weekend, only to have it returned by one of the parties involved Tuesday afternoon.

The incident at Harris Boys Auto on South Riverside Drive occurred Sunday just before 12:30am. 22-year-old Hannah Jacoby of Cedar Rapids was allegedly seen on surveillance video getting into a white Jeep Grand Cherokee and driving it away. The owner of the car did not give Jacoby permission to drive the car.

An officer was on scene at about 4:30 yesterday afternoon when area transient 22-year-old Bradley-Allen Schmidt returned the vehicle. When interviewed about the incident, he said that the keys were inside the vehicle when he and Jacoby took the vehicle. They then drove to Dubuque.

The two admitted to taking the vehicle and reportedly stated that neither of them had a valid driver’s license.

Jacoby and Schmidt were both charged with Operating a Vehicle without Owner’s Consent, an aggravated misdemeanor punishable by a jail sentence of up to two years apiece if convicted.
