A Coralville man charged in the Taboo Nightclub shootings in Cedar Rapids earlier this year wants to subpoena police records that may show previous shooting incidents between him and his victim.
The shooting on April 10th killed three people and injured 10. 29-year-old Dimione Walker of Coralville is charged with the murder of 25-year-old Michael Valentine. Video surveillance reportedly shows Walker shooting Valentine at point-blank range. Valentine suffered six gunshot wounds in the incident.
During their investigation, police talked to individuals who said that another shooting involving the two happened on March 26th at the Spare Time Entertainment Center in southeast Cedar Rapids. No arrests have been made in that incident, and the shooting remains under investigation.
Walker was also the victim of a 2016 shooting in the city.
The Gazette reports Walker’s lawyers believe there are police reports, narratives and other documents that have information regarding those previous incidents involving Walker and Valentine. Their motion asks the court for an order allowing them to serve a subpoena to Cedar Rapids police, which has refused to provide the information without a subpoena.
Walker’s proceedings were delayed because he was arrested in Illinois days after the incident and was being held in Joliet’s Stateville Prison on parole violations on a weapons count. A governor’s warrant was obtained to extradite him last month. Walker faces charges of first-degree murder, intimidation with a dangerous weapon, going armed with intent, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. If convicted on the murder charge, he could spend the rest of his life in prison.
