The Iowa City City Council will be addressing the proposed City Park Pool renovation plans, after the Iowa City Historic Preservation Commission’s memorandum recommended changing those plans.

The Daily Iowan reports that the Commission’s recommended Monday that the Council, quote, “explores minimal invasive ways to preserve and add accessibility to the existing pool before the City demolishes it and adds demolition waste.”

The pool redesign includes an expansion of square footage, a “lazy river” feature and more shaded space. Swimming lanes would be reduced from 9 to 3 as part of the plan. A petition disapproving the renovation plan with over 800 signatures was presented to the Council on September 6th.

The pool opened in 1949; the current renovation plan is estimated to cost over $6 million.
