The University of Iowa is temporarily suspending its search for a new vice president for medical affairs (VPMA) and dean of the Carver College of Medicine. The move comes after the selected nominee reportedly backed out of an offer to fill the position.

A national search for a new vice president and dean was launched in March with the university inviting four candidates to campus in August and September. The campus visits were set to allow university officials and the candidates time to engage and explore the opportunity.

Following the visits, the search committee and university leadership received feedback from campus stakeholders regarding the candidates and an offer was extended. Due to family obligations, the selected candidate declined the offer.

UI Vice President for Medical Affairs and Dean of the Carver College of Medicine Dr. Brooks Jackson has agreed to continue serving in the roles until his successor is hired.

School officials will spend the next several weeks meeting with and listening to leadership and other groups within UI Health Care and the Carver College of Medicine before resuming the search sometime this winter.
