Iowa high school, junior high and elementary school students have been practicing fire and tornado drills for decades. Now the Iowa City Community School District may soon add active shooter training to the list.

The Press-Citizen reports last summer’s deadly shooting in Uvalde, Texas, led administrators to discuss how to train students for a similar situation. School district employees already undergo training to deal with a potential school shooter, but no such training is currently being given to students. The newspaper reports school board members who took the training found it to be anxiety-educing, and thus would not recommend it for students. They are instead pushing a more educational approach vs. actual active shooter drills.

Discussion on what training to administer to students began at the September 13th school board meeting. Proposals will likely be discussed later this fall.
