A Coralville woman has been arrested after it was discovered she cashed thousands of dollars’ worth of bad checks last November.

Between the 10th and 15th of that month, 34-year-old Tasheanna McConnell of Holiday Road allegedly deposited three bad checks totaling $22,000 into her Midwest Bank One account. She then reportedly went to various retail stores and spent the money. McConnell also transferred some of the money into her Apple Cash and Cash App accounts.

The bank didn’t realize the checks were bad until the money had been spent. A warrant was issued for McConnell’s arrest on August 3rd.

She remained at large until Saturday morning. McConnell was located in a parking lot on the 200 block of South Gilbert Street at about 4:30 am and had earlier flagged down an officer regarding a man in a vehicle with a firearm. This led to a high-risk stop on the vehicle she described, with multiple officers drawing their firearms and ordering the man out of the vehicle.

When asked about the incident, McConnell denied making the claim about the armed male, and said she only briefly spoke with him before driving away.

McConnell allegedly had a strong odor of ingested alcohol, watery eyes and slightly slurred speech. Then asked her name, McConnell provided a false name and birthdate. She then stated that she had an ID card through both Illinois and Wisconsin. She also claimed to be 33, which was inconsistent with the original birthdate she provided. McConnell also stated that she didn’t know her Social Security Number. She was arrested for public intoxication, and then provided her actual name.

McConnell also faces charges of False Report of Indictable Offense, and Providing False Identification Information. For Saturday’s incident, she could face up to 14 months in jail. The theft charge is a Class C felony punishable by a prison term of up to ten years.
