A weekend fire in Cedar Rapids resulted in the death of several pets and the homeowner being hospitalized.
According to a release from the Cedar Rapids Fire Department, they were dispatched at around 11:30 pm Saturday to the 1700 block of 11th Street Northwest on reports of a house fire. Arriving crews found the two-story residence showing heavy fire from in front of the house.
A search of the first floor found an adult male victim, who was removed from the home and transported to St. Luke’s Hospital with what were described as serious injuries. The report indicates that several animals perished in the fire.
Heavy fire damage was sustained to the first and second floors, with smoke and water damage throughout. It is unknown whether the smoke alarms were working at the time of the blaze. The incident remains under investigation.
