A midday fire at a Cedar Rapids home sent a resident and firefighter to the hospital with unspecified injuries.

According to a release from the CRFD, the incident occurred at a house in the 2100 block of 9th  Street Southwest. Firefighters got the call just before 12:30pm and arrived to see fire and smoke coming from the story-and-a-half home. When they went inside to fight the fire, they discovered a man who sustained injuries. He was treated at the scene and transported to Mercy Medical Center. His condition is unknown.

A firefighter was injured when ceiling materials gave way and fell on him; preliminary indications showed minor injury, but the firefighter was taken to a hospital for evaluation and treatment as well.

The structure suffered fire damage in the room of origin, heat damage on the first floor, and heavy smoke damage throughout the home. Officials say the smoke detectors in the home were functioning.
