Iowa City Police say an Illinois man faces charges that he aimed a gun at a group of women and children after firing a shot into the air.

Officers were initially called to an address on Bittersweet Court just after 2:30 Friday afternoon for a fight between a male and multiple women. As police were on their way to the scene, the male reportedly produced a handgun, fired a shot into the air, then fled eastbound on foot.

The suspect, identified as 36-year-old Donald Martin, reportedly turned around in the parking lot of the Mormon Trek Boulevard Kum & Go, went back to the victims…including adults and children… and aimed the gun at them before fleeing again.

Police say the incident was caught on Kum & Go’s security video. Martin was captured a short time later near the intersection of West Benton Street and Spencer Drive, where he reportedly gave officers a fake name and date of birth.

Martin has an Illinois driver’s license, but no known address. He also has multiple convictions out of Illinois involving a stolen vehicle, weapons charges, drug charges, and burglary. Martin now faces charges of Intimidation with a Dangerous Weapon Provoking Fear, Dominion or Control of a Firearm as a Felon, Going Armed with Intent and Providing False Identity Information. If convicted on all charges from Friday’s incident, Martin faces a maximum of over 20 years in prison.
