An Iowa City man has been arrested on a warrant stemming from an alleged assault in early August.

Police say the incident occurred the afternoon of August 7th at the Quarters on Highway 6 East. 28-year-old Darnell Demon Murphy Jr. was allegedly part of an altercation that officers were called to. During their investigation, it was learned that Murphy was observed on video footage operating a vehicle, despite having a barred driving status.

The footage also reportedly shows Murphy throwing rocks at the victim from outside the pool area. As the victim leaves, Murphy is shown jumping the fence. He allegedly produced a pistol from his waistband and pointed it at the victim.

A search warrant executed September 1st located a replica Glock BB gun in Murphy’s residence. He reportedly admitted to being a part of the altercation and pointing the BB gun at the victim.  That date, Murphy was allegedly seen operating a vehicle again, despite his barred status. Four bags of marijuana were reportedly found in Murphy’s possession.

A warrant was issued for Murphy’s arrest; he was taken into custody Tuesday morning and charged with two counts of simple Assault, two counts of Driving While Barred as a Habitual Offender, and Possession of a Controlled Substance. If convicted on all charges, he could be sentenced to over five years in prison.
