The cost to renovate Johnson County municipal buildings is rising.
The Daily Iowan reports that the county is planning on allocating approximately $30.1 million in American Rescue Plan Act funds over the next five years to support the renovations, which are to take place at the Health and Human Services Building, the Ambulance and Medical Examiner’s Building, the County Courthouse, and the Historic Poor Farm.
Over half of the allocation, about $16.9 million, will go to the Health and Human services renovation project. They plan to update staff support rooms, public health offices, and relocate Juvenile Court services and the Department of Public Health.
As with most projects of this nature, inflation, materials and labor have raised the cost of the Johnson County plan. The previous estimate was $1.3 million less.
Zach Writer, the main facilitator in the renovation project with OPN Architects, told a County Supervisors meeting this week that renovations and construction of the Human Services Building and Ambulance/Medical Examiner buildings should be about half completed by December 2027.
