The family of an 11-year-old boy who drowned on the Raging River ride at Adventureland last summer is suing the state for nearly $100 million.
The Des Moines Register reports that the family of 11-year-old Michael Jaramillo alleges negligence by the Iowa’s Division of Labor was the “proximate cause” of the boy’s drowning on the ride and the injuries to other family members,
The Des Moines Register obtained suit details under Iowa’s open records law.
The family alleges that requirements like riders supervised at all times weren’t followed as far back as when the Raging River ride first opened in 1983. They also say that although the Iowa Division of Labor inspector said the ride was safe before the July 3rd accident last year, when in fact a later investigation found 17 serious safety violations.
The family asks for a total of $98.5 million in compensation. $12.1 million would be payable to Michael Jaramillo’s estate, with the remainder going to the other family members who were also injured that day.
