A Cedar Rapids man faces charges that he led police on a chase through Iowa City, North Liberty and Cedar Rapids…only ending when he hit a moving train.

Iowa City Police say they initially tried to pull over a 1999 Jeep Wrangler that was travelling at 76 miles per hour in a 25 mile per hour zone on Dubuque Street near Kimball Road just after 1:30 Sunday morning. The driver instead sped up, and the pursuit was eventually terminated.

Johnson County deputies later caught up to the vehicle in North Liberty, and a new pursuit began. The driver, later identified as 24-year-old John Affre of Kirkwood Parkway SW, took northbound Highway 965 to 6th Street SW in Cedar Rapids. Cedar Rapids Police deployed tire deflation devices, and the pursuit ended when Affre hit the side of a moving train.

Police say Affre showed signs of intoxication and provided a breath alcohol level of .172%. He was booked into the Johnson County just after 3:30am and charged with Felony Eluding, Operating While Intoxicated, and numerous traffic violations. If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum of six years in prison. There is no word on impending charges out of Linn County.
