The suspect in an Iowa City police chase is now in custody.

31-year-old Morgan Powell of Westwinds Drive was booked into the Johnson County Jail just before 11:15 Wednesday night. Iowa City Police say Powell was wanted after leading officers on a chase just after 5:30pm on July 26th. According to arrest records, police noticed Powell driving a 2006 Chevy Impala with no front license plate and illegal tint on the front windows on the 1200 block of Gilbert Court. He was also reportedly not wearing a seat belt.

Officers initiated a traffic stop, but Powell allegedly turned into the All Pets parking lot on Kirkwood Avenue before pulling back out eastbound on Kirkwood, then ducking into another parking lot before pulling away from police. The vehicle was later located on Webster Street.

A search of the car reportedly turned up 3.5 grams of marijuana as well as documents identifying Powell. Police say Powell turned up at Big Ten Towing to retrieve the car and matched the description of the driver.

Powell was arrested just before 10:15 Wednesday night after he was pulled over in the same vehicle at the intersection of Muscatine Avenue and 1st Avenue for a traffic violation. He’s now charged with two counts each Driving While Barred and Driving While Denied or Revoked, as well as one count each of Eluding and Possession of a Controlled Substance. If convicted on all charges, Powell faces a maximum of eight years in prison.
