Iowa City Police say a suspect claimed the cocaine in his pocket wasn’t his because it wasn’t his pocket.

Officers were on patrol outside H Bar on South Van Burren Street just before 3:15am when they say they saw 43-year-old James Franizer of Western Road walk out of the building while holding a red Solo cup. Franizer reportedly walked away from police while swaying heavily, and refused to stop when an officer shined his flashlight on him.

Officers caught up with Franizer on the 200 block of South Johnson Street, where he allegedly dropped the cup near a car, spilling liquid on the ground. Police say Franizer showed signs of intoxication and smelled of burnt marijuana.

A search of Franizer’s person allegedly turned up a sandwich bag containing a white powdery substance inside his pocket. Franizer allegedly told police, “That’s not my pocket.”

Franizer was arrested and charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance and Public Intoxication.
