A drunk driving suspect is accused of repeatedly using a racial slur when addressing an Iowa City Police officer.

The deputy pulled over 21-year-old Cameron Williams of Marion just after 2am Saturday as he was driving his 2010 Nissan Maxima the wrong way down Market Street with his headlights off. Williams reportedly got out of the car and fled on foot, but was eventually tasered and captured.

Police say Williams showed multiple signs of extreme intoxication and refused breath testing. The arresting officer reports Williams repeatedly called him the “n word” ending with an “a” during the encounter, despite being told not to multiple times.  Williams is white, while the arresting deputy is black.

Williams is charged with Operating While Intoxicated – 2nd Offense, 3rd Degree Harassment, Interference With Official Acts and a pair of traffic/equipment violations. If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum of 26 months in jail.
