An area transient wanted on a number of charges in the past months has been taken into custody.

Police say the first warrant stemmed from an alleged theft on the Coralville Strip in November. 22-year-old Jaquon Hemphill entered Keystone Liquor the morning of the 8th and requested merchandise from behind the counter. After attempting to pay for the merchandise with a temporary card, he allegedly took the merchandise and left the store.

On January 16th, Hemphill reportedly caused an automobile accident on Hawkins Drive in Iowa City and fled the scene. Occupants of the other vehicle required medical attention. It was determined that Hemphill’s driving status was revoked for OWI test failure from July 2021, suspended for non-payment of fines, and reportedly had no car insurance at the time of the collision.

Hemphill then is accused of assaulting a person he was living with as she was driving him across town this April. The criminal complaint says that Hemphill became agitated and began assaulting the victim, causing injuries to her face, arm and fingers.

On May 21st, Coralville police were dispatched to a residence on the 400 block of 4th Avenue on reports of an assault. The victim reported that Hemphill shoved her into a mirror while they were both on the back porch, cutting her chin. Once back inside, he allegedly shoved her head, putting a hole in the drywall. The two had ended their live-in relationship by the time of that incident.

Just before 1am the next morning, Hemphill reportedly entered the residence without the woman’s permission. She was sleeping when he began to hit her head and face. The woman’s parent was on the second floor of the residence and witnessed Hemphill leaving the scene.

Hemphill was picked up Sunday night and faces a litany of charges. They include 3rd degree Theft, Driving while Revoked, Domestic Abuse Assault, 2 counts of  Domestic Abuse Assault causing Injury, and 2nd degree Burglary. If convicted on all charges, Hemphill could be sentenced to up to over 15 years in prison.
