An Iowa City man was arrested over the weekend after allegedly driving drunk and assaulting his sister.

Police say the incident occurred at the Hilltop Trailer Park on Waterfront Drive Sunday just before 2:30 am. 39-year-old Macros Lopez-Torrez pushed his sister down to the ground, and pushed her back down when she attempted to get up.  Lopez-Torrez is also accused of kicking his sister on the right side of her ribs and stomping on her sternum. Once she was able to get up, Lopez-Torrez reportedly punched her in the face.

After the assault, the woman tried to grab her phone to call 911, but Lopez-Torrez allegedly grabbed the phone first and took it into another room.

Police were called, and upon arrival saw a severely damaged 2007 Honda Fit that was still warm. When they confronted Lopez-Torrez about the vehicle, he allegedly admitted to drinking 8 Coronas prior to driving the vehicle. Witnesses said they didn’t see him drinking after the crash.

After showing measurable impairment on field tests, Lopez-Torrez submitted to a Datamaster test that showed his blood-alcohol level at .143 percent.

Lopez-Torrez had been living with his sister for about two weeks.

He was arrested and charged with OWI 1st offense, Domestic Abuse Assault causing Injury, and Obstruction of Emergency Communications. If convicted on all counts, Lopez-Torrez could be sentenced to up to 25 months in jail.
