The head of Iowa City’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission has announced that he’s stepping down.

The Press-Citizen reports that Chair Mohammaed Traore was elected in March 2021 after several resignations, a revamping of the commission, and a one-month pause of its work.

Traore said that Vice Chair Amel Ali has been largely running the TRC meetings over the last several months as they focused on hiring a facilitator. He called her the de-facto chair, given her stepping up and leading the effort.

Traore added that personal family matters and wanting to pursue his career goals were among the many reasons he wanted to step down. He believes Ali is better suited to run the commission.

The newspaper adds that Last week, the TRC met with ThinkPeace, a nonprofit with a history of leading efforts on truth, reconciliation, peacebuilding and trauma healing in the US and across the world.

Traore expressed his desire to still serve on the Commission, just not as chair.
