An area transient was taken into custody on a theft warrant after failing to appear for his case management conference.

The incident occurred back on October 16th, 2020. According to the original criminal complaint, 27-year-old Quincy Bartels was at the Mormon Trek Boulevard Delimart a little after 11:30pm when he asked the victim for a ride to Cedar Rapids. When the victim told him no, Bartels instead asked for a dime. The victim gave him a quarter, and the two went inside to make purchases.

Bartels reportedly left the store before the victim. When the victim went outside, they discovered their 2007 Dodge Caravan missing. The victim was able to identify Bartels because he left his belongings on the side of the store.

Bartels was earlier dropped off at the store by a Johnson County Sheriff’s deputy who was also able to identify him. Bartels was then located in the driver’s seat of the stolen vehicle at a Cedar Rapids Casey’s by Cedar Rapids Police the next day just before 3:30pm. He allegedly admitted to “making a mistake” when questioned about stealing the vehicle.

Bartels had been wanted since failing to appear for a Case Management Conference on April 23rd of last year. He was booked into the Johnson County Jail at around 2pm Sunday. He faces a 2nd degree Theft charge that if convicted could send him to prison for up to five years.

Court records show detainers on Bartels from Linn County and the Wisconsin Department of Corrections.
